TVFCU Celebrates National Fair Housing Month

April 7, 2025

In April, Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union (TVFCU) celebrates National Fair Housing Month, a time to reflect on the efforts made and the ongoing work to ensure equal housing opportunities for everyone. This month marks the 1968 passage of the Fair Housing Act, a piece of legislation aimed at ending housing discrimination and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, or familial status, have access to fair and equitable housing.

The Legacy of the Fair Housing Act: A Turning Point in History

Signed into law on April 11, 1968, just days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Fair Housing Act was a direct response to the systemic barriers and inequities that individuals faced when attempting to rent, buy, or finance a home. Dr. King’s advocacy for civil rights, including housing justice, created the need for change. The Fair Housing Act marked a historic step in the fight against housing discrimination, laying the groundwork for future efforts to promote inclusive homeownership.
