Protect Yourself from Money Mule Scams
March 4, 2025

At Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union (TVFCU), your financial safety is our priority. One growing threat is the money mule scam, where scammers trick individuals into transferring stolen funds, often unknowingly. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC, n.d.), money mules are individuals who, knowingly or unknowingly, transfer illegally acquired money on behalf of others, helping criminals hide the origins of stolen funds.
A money mule moves money for criminals to disguise the source of stolen funds. Scammers recruit mules in several ways. One common method is through fake job offers, especially high-paying, work-from-home roles that require handling financial transactions. Another tactic is through romance scams, where fraudsters form online relationships and then ask the victim to receive or transfer money on their behalf. Additionally, prize scams lure victims by claiming they’ve won a prize but must first send money or manage transactions to claim it (FTC, n.d.).
To protect yourself, it is crucial to recognize the warning signs. Be wary of quick money schemes, such as job offers with high pay for minimal work, as these are often red flags. Always protect your bank information and never share account details with strangers or online acquaintances. Avoid making financial transfers for others, especially for people you’ve only met online. Trust your instincts—if something feels off, it probably is.
If you suspect you are involved in a scam, take immediate action. Stop communication with the scammer right away. Notify TVFCU of any suspicious account activity. It’s also important to contact authorities by filing a report with the FTC and local law enforcement, as the FTC (n.d.) encourages victims to report scams to help protect others.
Your financial security matters to us. If you are unsure about a transaction or suspect fraudulent activity, contact us immediately. By staying informed and vigilant, you can protect yourself from money mule scams. Stay safe, stay secure, and bank confidently with TVFCU.
