Beware – Fraudulent Check Scam
A new fraudulent check scam is currently circulating the Tennessee Valley. The scam involves cashiers checks that appears to be written from a local financial institution. The scammers are sending these to various people saying that they have been selected for some type of shopper program. They are then instructed to deposit the check and wire money to the scammers. Depending on the timeline and hold on the check, individuals may wire the money before the checks are returned as fraudulent leaving the person with no real recourse.
These fraudulent checks are most likely produced by an individual getting a cashiers check from their financial institution and being sent to the scammer unknowingly either by mail or by digital copy.
Please be extremely cautious when receiving unsolicited checks in the mail. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
